ABOUT BLOSSOM- A space to belong.
WHY BLOSSOM EXISTS
Young motherhood can be beautiful, powerful and transformative.
It can also be lonely.
Too many young mums experience judgement, isolation and a lack of spaces that genuinely feel like they are for them. For Black and Global Majority young mums in particular, mainstream mother-and-baby spaces can feel culturally disconnected, uncomfortable or unwelcoming.
Blossom was created to change that.
We make space for young mums to come as they are — without stereotypes, shame or assumptions about what their lives should look like.
Here, motherhood and identity can coexist with creativity, ambition, friendship, play and possibility.
OUR STORY
Blossom began with a conversation between a mother and daughter.
After my eldest daughter, Aaliyah, became a young mum, she spoke openly about how uncomfortable and isolated she felt in existing mother-and-baby spaces. She couldn't find somewhere that felt genuinely welcoming to her or reflected her experience as a young mum.
That conversation stayed with me.
As a community practitioner, artist and facilitator who had spent years working alongside young people and communities across South London, I began looking more closely at what was available.
I saw a gap.
Young mums were being spoken about, but not always listened to. There were spaces for mothers, but far fewer spaces designed with young mothers at the centre — particularly Black and Global Majority young mums.
So I decided to create one. We piloted Blossom's first sessions with the support of Alchemy Goldsmiths: and began sourcing toys and equipment, gathering donations, printing flyers, building relationships with local services and creating spaces where young mums and their children could simply come together.
What started organically has grown into a developing community, programme and movement.
Blossom exists because young mums deserve to be chosen, listened to and invested in.
MEET THE FOUNDER
Y.A. — Founder of Blossom Young Mums
Award-winning poet, writer, artist, facilitator and community practitioner.
Y.A. has spent years working across South London with young people, families, artists and communities, specialising in creative engagement, lyricism, storytelling, maternal wellbeing and community development.
Her practice sits at the intersection of creativity, care and social change.
Through her work, she challenges stereotypes and creates opportunities for people whose voices are too often overlooked.
Blossom grew from that practice — and from a personal commitment to creating something different for young mothers.
“Blossom challenges the system, the treatment of young, often vulnerable mothers and chooses them despite stereotypes and stigmas.”
BUILT WITH COMMUNITY
Blossom has grown through relationships with young mums, artists, practitioners, local organisations and community partners.
Our work has been supported through collaborations, funding and partnerships including THINC, Goldsmiths University / CCA, the Alchemy Project, COVO Space, MamaKind Baby Bank, Community TechAid, Lewisham Bank of Things and John Lewis x FENTY donations.
We are continuing to build relationships with organisations working across maternal wellbeing, housing, advocacy, family support, creativity and community development.
Because no one organisation can do this alone.
to the mums…
You belong here.
Young motherhood should never mean losing your sense of self, your voice or your community.
Your voice matters.
We create opportunities for young mums to tell their stories, express themselves and be heard.
Creativity can change things.
Writing, poetry, art, conversation and play can create pathways to confidence, connection and wellbeing.
Community comes first.
Blossom grows with young mums — not simply for them.
Young mums deserve opportunity.
We want to see young mothers supported not only to survive, but to imagine, create and build the futures they want.
MORE THAN A SERVICE
Blossom isn't just somewhere to go for a session.
It's somewhere to meet someone who gets it.
Somewhere to bring your baby.
Somewhere to write.
Somewhere to laugh.
Somewhere to have a conversation.
Somewhere to discover what you're capable of.
Somewhere to be seen as more than a statistic.
We want Blossom to become a community where young mums can connect, create, grow and lead.
THIS IS BLOSSOM
A place to connect.
A space to create.
A community to grow with.
A platform for young mothers
to be seen, heard and celebrated.
Come as you are. Bring your little one. Find your people.
WHO WE SUPPORT
Blossom centres young mothers aged 15–25, with a particular focus on creating culturally responsive spaces for Black and Global Majority young mums.
Our community includes mums at different stages of motherhood and life — from teen mums navigating early motherhood to young women finding their feet, building confidence, returning to education, developing creative practices or simply looking for somewhere they can belong.
There is no one way to be a young mum.
That's why we listen first.
OUR APPROACH
Blossom brings together creativity, community and support.
Our work is:
CREATIVE
We use poetry, writing, storytelling, art, music and creative play as tools for expression and connection.
CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE
We create spaces that recognise culture, identity and lived experience rather than expecting everyone to fit into the same model.
TRAUMA-INFORMED
We work with warmth, sensitivity and an understanding that people's experiences shape how they engage with support and community.
COMMUNITY-LED
Young mums aren't simply participants. Their experiences, ideas and voices help shape what Blossom becomes.
NON-JUDGEMENTAL
We meet people where they are, without reducing them to their age, circumstances or motherhood.
